According to renowned author and quilt historian Barbara Brackman, written references to the Log Cabin block can be found as far back as 1863. The name may have been a political choice tied to Abraham Lincoln’s presidential campaign in 1860, and William Henry Harrison had already campaigned as a “log cabin candidate” in the 1840s. The earliest confirmed Log Cabin quilt Brackman references dates to 1874, made from light and dark dress fabrics left over from the stylish clothing of the era.
