Crafting in a Small Space: Dreaming Big with Limited Room

Ahh, the dream of a big, spacious sewing studio, complete with sprawling work surfaces and plenty of room to move around… wouldn’t it be lovely? Some quilters and sewists are lucky enough to have room to move, but for the rest of us, working in a small space can pose unique challenges. Whether your workspace is a tiny bedroom, cozy corner or even a converted closet, you can still make it functional and inspiring with a few smart strategies. Let’s explore common challenges and straightforward solutions to help you make the most of your space.

Storage Woes: Finding Room for Everything

Rulers, pins, clips, pens, needles, presser feet, shears, rotary cutters… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Sewing, quilting and crafting supplies can seem to multiply overnight, and in a small space, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The key is to get creative with storage.

Solutions:

  • Go Vertical: Out of floor space? Time to start climbing the walls! Wall-mounted shelves and pegboards can be incredibly helpful in keeping your tools and supplies organized, accessible and within reach. We like to store our thread right out where we can see it using June Tailor thread spool holders! They come in three sizes and can be used on a tabletop or hung on the wall.
  • Compact and Multi-Function Furniture: You work very hard to bring beautiful things to life, and it’s only fair that your furniture does the same. Look for pieces that do double or triple duty, like the Millie Cutting & Ironing Table by Arrow Sewing, and pieces that fold up small, like the Bandicoot Sewing Cabinet (also by Arrow Sewing) with built-in storage solutions.
  • Clear Containers: Keep supplies visible and tidy with clear containers. Make sure you organize and separate your supplies by type, and then store in containers you can see right through! You’ll be amazed how much more you can accomplish in every sewing session when you’re not hunting for your tools!
  • Declutter Regularly: This is nobody’s favorite task, but it’s truly necessary to keep an organized studio in a small space. Sort through your supplies periodically to ensure your space stays manageable. Remove and replace old, broken tools and accessories as you go, sort your fabric scraps for later use, and keep on top of the little things. You’ll find it makes a big difference in the long run.

Limited Work Surface

A small floorplan doesn’t have to limit your work surface space! With a bit of flexibility and some smart solutions, you can create an efficient setup that expands with your projects and your imagination.

Solutions:

  • Portable Tables: Who ever said your sewing studio has to stay in one room? With collapsible sewing tables like the Gidget II Sewing Table by Arrow Classic Sewing Furniture, if you have 4 inches of space, you have room to store your sewing table. Collapsible tables like this are game changers for small and impermanent spaces! Easy to set up, easy to take down and easy to stash under a bed or behind a door.

  • Portable Cutting Mats and Die Cutting Solutions: Smaller mats can turn any surface into a rotary cutting station. There are a number of portable cutting mats available from AccuQuilt and June Tailor – These are our favorites. And speaking of AccuQuilt, you’ll be amazed at how much space using an AccuQuilt GO! fabric cutting system can save! The Ready. Set. GO! Ultimate Fabric Cutting System folds up small and makes quick, organized work of cutting. From strips to unique shapes to entire quilt blocks, the AccuQuilt GO! system keeps your cutting operation from taking over your world.

  • Triple Duty Pieces: The harder your furniture works for you, the better! And if your furniture can work two or three jobs for you, all the better. Take the Eleanor Sewing Table by Arrow Classic Sewing Furniture. A piece like this, with the right accessories, does it all - from cutting and pressing to sewing or serging – without taking up too much valuable real estate.

Organizational Chaos

In small spaces, organization is crucial. Without it, you can easily find yourself spending more time hunting for the right tool or fabric than stitching!

Solutions:

  • Designate Zones: Even in a small space, creating areas for cutting, sewing, and pressing can help keep things orderly. Smart furniture can help – if you have even 6 feet of wall space, you can put a  multi-functional cabinet like the Laverne & Shirley Sewing Cabinet by Arrow Sewing to good use! Furniture like this, with built-in cutting, pressing and sewing stations, takes the guesswork out of setting up a multi-functional, multi-zone micro studio.

  • Use Labels: Clearly label bins and drawers to make locating items quick and easy. Even if you’re using clear bins, labels telling you what’s in the container are a great idea! Spend less time hunting and more time sewing.

  • Smart Organizers: Arrow Sewing Furniture incorporates smart storage ideas into their furniture offerings! Take the Kiwi Storage Cabinet as a perfect example. It combines a pressing station, a cutting station, and a whole lot of storage space, not to mention two removable thread spool holders. Perfect for tiny crafting spaces!

Maintaining Comfort

Your physical comfort and health are of paramount importance no matter where you are, but in a small space, comfortable, ergonomically designed furniture is a game-changer. Small spaces absolutely do not have to be uncomfortable, inefficient spaces! We have some ideas to keep you comfortable and creative, no matter how much floor space you have.

Solutions:

  • Employ Ergonomics: The easiest way to make sure you’re sitting pretty through hours and hours of intensive crafting is to get yourself a really good chair. The original, authentic Hydraulic Sewing Chair by Arrow Sewing checks all the boxes with targeted lumbar support, adjustable seat height, super-stable 5-star base with non-marking wheels, and storage right in the seat! Ergonomic furniture that helps with storage and organization? Brilliant!

  • Let There Be Good Lighting: If your space lacks natural light, you may be setting yourself up for eye strain and even headaches. Make sure you have good, targeted task lighting! You can find dedicated task lighting at every price point, and you’ll be so much more comfortable with shadows banished from your work.

  • Stretch Breaks: There’s no hack for this one – in order to maintain your comfort and good physical health, remember to move your body! Every 30 – 60 minutes or so, get up out of that comfortable, ergonomic chair, step away from your impressive WIP (Work In Progress), and give a big stretch! Getting your blood flowing will make your body and your brain feel more energized and allow that creativity to flow!
