Quilts with a Contemporary & Modern Feel (Jan. 16 – March 15, 2013)
AccuQuilt is excited to share quilts from our designers Robbi Joy Eklow, Bill Kerr, and Laura Wasilowski whom represent the contemporary art and modern quilt aesthetics of the AccuQuilt design team. The above three live in the Chicago area but have unique and expressive styles of their own. Both Robbi Joy and Laura are known for the very contemporary art style. These quilts have been paired against Bill Kerr’s quilts representing the modern quilt movement. You will quickly determine that these styles are completely different in artistic style and feel.
Robbi Joy Eklow
Robbi’s first attempt at quilting was in the 1970’s while she was in high school. Drawing from a very traditional pattern, she cut a drunkard’s path out using electric scissors and she claims it was really “ugly”. In 1987, Robbi started quilting again when her children were babies. She quickly discovered that quilting was more then just making quilts. For Robbi, quilting has had the anchor of friendships, an excuse to hang out at quilt stores and a reason to have coffee after guild meetings.
Robbi enjoys working with fiber and uses it as a way to introduce herself to people. Her art quilts are from hand-dyed cotton fabrics with bonded appliqué and extensive free motion quilting on the surface. Robbi lectures and teaches to share her techniques, and encourages others to find their voice through fiber.
Robbi describes her quilting style as a combination of the traditional as well as contemporary. Robbi lectures and teaches internationally and has shown quilts and won ribbons in major quilt shows. She writes a bi-monthly column “Goddess of the Last Minute” for Quilting Arts Magazine. In addition, she has written articles, and her work has been published, in several major quilt publications. Look for her books: Free Expression: The Art and Confessions of a Contemporary Quilter and Goddess of the Last Minute.
Bill Kerr
Artist, quilter, author, fabric designer and lecturer describe Bill and his wife Weeks Ringle. Owners of Modern Quilt Studio, a design studio, originally founded as FunQuilts in 1999, Bill and Weeks infuse creativity into every part of their designs and stitch every custom quilt themselves. Their focus is to keep their work fresh, modern and original. They both have graduate degrees in design and lead workshops on design for quilt makers nationally and internationally helping quilters find their own voice.
FunQuilts has published several books such as: Color Harmony for Quilts, The Quiltmaker’s Color Workshop, and the best-selling The Modern Quilt Workshop. Their quilts have appeared in national magazines, prestigious museums and in quilt craft and decorative art shows internationally.
Laura Wasilowski
Laura Wasilowski is both contemporary quilt maker and creator of hand-dyed fabrics and threads. Whimsical is a word that describes her art work. Her pictorial art quilts (created from fused fabrics and hand-embroidered or machine quilted) are collected and exhibited internationally. Laura’s narrative quilts begin with her unique hand-dyed fabrics and are inspired by stories of family, friends and home.
She has an undergraduate degree in Costuming from the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, MN and a Master of Art degree in Fiber from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL.
Owner of the dye shop, Artfabrik, Laura is also a lecturer, surface designer, quilt instructor, pattern designer, and author of Fusing Fun and Fuse-and-Tell. She has exhibited in this country, the Netherlands, Spain, and Japan and her work has appeared in numerous publications.

Groovy Guitar Reboot 2011 (35" x 45") Robbi Joy Eklow
My son took guitar lessons and my daughter played the bass. The center guitar is one I’ve had for over 40 years. I made a quilt about guitars ten years ago, sold the pattern, but people kept asking for a new pattern. I kept putting it off until Jimmy Stafford’s mother asked about the pattern. Jimmy Stafford plays guitar for Train, my favorite band. I finished the quilt and sent her a copy of the pattern.
Tea and Empathy 2000 (60" x 66") Robbi Joy Eklow
Lynne Warner has been my friend for 40 years. We go in and out of touch but can always start up right where we left off. Lynne knows me better than anyone else. This quilt is about our friendship. Lynne gave me the tulip bulb vase when we used to have tea together. And what quilt is not great without donuts?
Shoot the Moon 2003 (40" x 52") Robbi Joy Eklow
This quilt is part of an ongoing series exploring gear-like shapes in interrupted circles.
Yellow Chair Loves Apples 2007 (42" x 44") Laura Wasilowski
I have a fondness for chairs. They are so welcoming, always offering you a seat to rest your weary bones. This quilt is based upon the first chair I acquired as a child and reminds me of my teenage years when I refinished it and wove a new seat for it out of bailing twine. Yellow chair is like an old friend, always there to embrace me.
Reading Lamp 2009 (40" x 44") Laura Wasilowski
Not only do I have a fondness for chairs but I love a good play on words. Here you see a lamp engrossed in a fascinating book on quilt making. It is a well read lamp.
Waiting for Weezie 2006 (30" x 38") Laura Wasilowski
Waiting for Weezie began as an experiment in weaving fused fabric strips. This method of improvisational quilt making quickly led to a picture of a chair sitting by my kitchen window. While building the quilt I was thinking of my daughter, Louise (Weezie), who was on the other side of the world. Picture and story came together as I created the art and awaited her return.
Prelude to Pie 2001 (46" x 46") Laura Wasilowski
This piece is a picture of my wish and desire for apple pie. Someday I shall make that apple pie. True, I haven’t baked a pie in 30 years but the idea of eating one occurs to me daily.
