FAQ - GO! Fabric Cutter

What is the AccuQuilt GO! Fabric Cutter?
A portable fabric cutter designed for home use, the GO! Fabric Cutter can cut up to six layers of fabric at a time. The GO! Fabric Cutter features its own line of exclusive dies that are lightweight and affordable. The dies feature a self-tray system and use a specially designed self-healing cutting mat. The cutter is sold through GO! Authorized Retailers and distributors as well as direct from AccuQuilt.

What comes with the GO! Fabric Cutter?
The GO! Fabric Cutter includes a free die that features three shapes in one—4 1/2" square (4" finished), 2 1/2" square (2" finished) and 2" finished half-square triangle, a die pick, a 10" x 10" cutting mat and a user’s manual.

How long will the GO! cutting mats last?
GO! cutting mats last for hundreds of cuts on both sides before needing to be replaced. You can extend its life by rotating and flipping the mat and not cutting in the same place each time. Dies with extensive blades such as the rag dies will wear mats out more quickly. If you start to experience inconsistent cuts, it’s likely your cutting mat needs to be replaced.

FAQ - Studio Fabric Cutter

What is the AccuQuilt Studio Fabric Cutter?
Specially designed for quilt shops, fabric craft retailers and home quilters, the Studio Fabric Cutter quickly and easily cuts up to 10 layers of fabric for quilting and fabric crafts. It is a heavy duty cutter designed for heavy use and is ideal for quilt retailers, commercial applications and the avid home quilter. Hundreds of die shapes are available. This cutter is sold exclusively through AccuQuilt.

What is the difference between the Studio Fabric Cutter and the GrandeMARK Machine?
AccuQuilt remanufactured the original GrandeMARK Roller Die Cutting Machine to reinforce our commitment to quilting enthusiasts and named it the AccuQuilt Studio Fabric Cutter.

What comes with the Studio Fabric Cutter?
The Studio Fabric Cutter comes with a standard Studio die tray, nine pieces of assorted cutting plastic, a die pick and user’s manual. Dies may be ordered separately or Studio starter sets are available that include the Studio Fabric Cutter and some of our most popular dies.

How long will the Studio cutting plastic and tray last?
Replacement needs will depend on usage. You can extend the cutting plastic’s life by using both sides of the plastic and not cutting in the same place each time. Dies with extensive blades such as the rag dies will wear out mats more quickly. The tray will last longest if you cut with the dies placed to the outside edges instead of in the center of the tray. We recommend the tray be replaced at least once a year depending on usage. If you start to experience inconsistent cuts, it’s likely your plastic and/or tray needs to be replaced.

FAQ - Dies

Which dies do I use with the patterns you offer?
See the product page for each pattern to see the list of which AccuQuilt dies are used. Buy patterns

How many layers of fabric can I cut at one time?
On the Studio Fabric Cutter, you can cut up to 10 layers of 100% cotton fabric at one time. On the GO! Fabric Cutter, you can cut up to six layers. The number of layers you are able to cut with other types of fabrics depends on the thickness and density of the fabric plus the intricacy of the die design. We recommend trying some test cuts to determine how many layers work best with each type of fabric and die combination.

Can I use the dies to create more than one project?
Absolutely! We offer patterns and project ideas to help you see how you can combine dies into different looks. These represent only some of the ways you can combine the dies and will help inspire you to create even more beautiful designs. Our free downloadable patterns are a great place to start. You can find them on many die product pages and project idea pages.

Can I use the steel-rule dies from the system we have at school on your cutter or your dies on it?
The Studio Fabric Cutter is designed to cut fabric. You may be able to use other dies with our system, but we can’t guarantee the results that you will get. GO! dies are exclusive to and only fit the GO! Fabric Cutter. They are not interchangeable with the Studio Fabric Cutter or any other cutter.

Can we cut other materials such as paper with the dies?
You can cut other materials such as fusible web and small amounts of paper with our dies. We recommend keeping this practice to a minimum and that you treat your Studio and GO! fabric dies like you would your fabric cutting scissors.

How often do the blades need to be sharpened?
You do not need to sharpen the blades. Our dies have a one-year warranty on defects in materials or workmanship. They will give you many years of service if you maintain them by keeping them clean--using a lint roller to remove threads from the foam and a die pick to remove threads from between the blades. If it seems the die is not cutting well on either cutter, we recommend first checking if the plastic or tray needs replacement on the Studio Fabric Cutter or the mat needs replacement on the GO! Fabric Cutter.

How should I store my dies?
AccuQuilt offers a line of storage solutions for the Studio and GO! dies, including wire die storage racks, storage cases and a fabric cutter tote for GO! dies. Dies can also be stored on end like books. We do not recommend stacking them on top of each other. See the GO! Die Storage Rack, GO! Fabric Cutter Tote and Studio die storage options.

Why are the shapes on the dies angled?
For ease of cutting, the shapes on the dies are angled slightly to keep the blades from running parallel through the roller. Think of it as a speed bump—you angle your car over the bump rather than meeting it
head on.

Do I line my fabric to the die board or the blade?
Line your fabric so it just covers the blades. You do not need to cover the whole die board--you only need to cover the shape(s) you want on the die. If the blades on the dies are at an angle it is best to angle your fabric to just cover the blades. This will ensure the fabric grain is aligned with the shapes’ edges.

How do I keep my dies clean?
Use a lint roller to remove threads from the foam and the die pick that comes with the cutter to remove threads from between the blades. If it seems the die is not cutting well on either cutter, we recommend first checking if the plastic or tray needs replacement on the Studio Fabric Cutter or if the mat needs replacement on the GO! Fabric Cutter.
