Introducing the GO! Nine Patch Star-9" Finished Die

The nine patch quilt block is a classic. Among its many charms are the ease in sewing and how well it lends itself to using scraps. This July 2025 GO! Die to Try™ takes all the goodness of the basic nine patch blocks and turns it on it’s ear, becoming the still simple-yet-versatile and difficult-looking GO! Nine Patch Star-9” Finished Block.

If you’re like me, you love a great star block, and what better kind of block could we possibly use to kick off our annual month of holiday fun otherwise known as Christmas in July! Start to finish, this starry die is a winner.

There are only 4 shapes that you need to create this block, and they are all arranged on a 10” x 10” die board that will work with the GO! or GO! Big Fabric Cutters. Pesky dog ears have been removed to save you extra time along the way, and the shapes have been screen printed with letters to make assembly even easier. Cutting these shapes is a snap and will take you almost no time at all. By laying 4 layers of fabric over all the shapes/groups of shapes (5 for Shape A), you’ll have an entire block cut in just one pass. Do you see the notches on the sides of Shapes C and D? Those will help your line up your pieces perfectly. And here’s my first Pro Tip: Shape D is a directional shape – all 3 sides are different sizes, so you will need to fan fold your fabric over those Shape D pieces so that half will be cut right-side up and half will be cut right-side down.

With that done, it’s time to lay out your block and start stitching. It’s always a great idea to pull out your new dies and make a test block for yourself! You will find detailed cutting and assembly directions free to download on the die’s product page at AccuQuilt.com, and it even includes a coloring page for the block to help you plan your projects!

There are so many design possibilities with this die using color and orientation of the block that I can hardly wait to introduce you to the free downloadable patterns using this die. It’s also great for pairing up with other Block on Board® (BOB®) dies or set on point using the GO! Setting Triangles-9” Finished. Setting this block on point not only changes the look of the basic block, but it gives you a secondary pattern that makes it look like you’ve worked much harder than you really have!

GO! Churning Nine Patch Throw Quilt Pattern

If you were wondering what would happen if you combined a block made with the GO! Qube with the GO! Nine Patch Star BOB, wonder no more! For this stunning quilt, designer Suzy of Webster of Webster Quilts got creative by making a stylish Churn Dash block using the GO! Qube Mix & Match 6” Finished Block. Since the elements she used from that Qube finish to 3”, she was able to create a nine patch block that would finish to the same size as the GO! Nine Patch Star. The combination of these two blocks gives the look of a circular pattern with all straight seams!

GO! Halloween Nine Patch Star Pattern

It’s never too early to make a Halloween quilt, and this one is simply adorable. It starts with setting GO! Nine Patch Star blocks on point, which changes the entire look of the block. Designer Suzy Webster of Webster Quilts has teamed them up with clever nine patch blocks made from the GO! Qube Mix & Match 6” Finished Block. If you’re a quilter who’s avoided setting blocks on point, GO! Setting Triangles-9” Finished are used here making it quick and easy for any quilter to use.

GO! Liberty Nine Table Runner Pattern

Two different blocks from one die? You bet! Ellen Ault of Handmade 3D created this clever table runner for AccuQuilt by alternating the standard GO! Nine Patch Star block with a block created with just shapes C and D on the die board. This clever design creates stars, stars and more stars. Maybe we should call this die “Blocks” on Board!

GO! Periwinkle Field Throw Quilt Pattern

Speaking of clever ways to use the GO! Nine Patch Star die to create more than just one design, take a look at this lovely throw quilt designed and created for AccuQuilt by Chris Marchini of Rose City Originals. Here, Chris has used all the shapes on the GO! Nine Patch Star die to create a new block and two stunning borders that all work together to form a lovely quilt. The center blocks are created using Shapes C and D together. The first border is created using Shape B combined with a creative use of color, followed by the outer border of partial Nine Patch Star blocks made using Shapes A and B.
