Beginner-Friendly Sewing Projects You Can Sew in a Weekend

In the wake of social distancing, so many people have started or restarted their sewing journey. In fact, we've heard story after story of retailers selling out of sewing machines and notions throughout this spring and summer. We might be biased, but sewing is the perfect craft for a weekend, so we decided to find a few patterns that were meant for just that: relaxing, beginner-friendly weekend sewing. Will you make one?

Strip Cutter Scrappy Wreath

This DIY seasonal scrappy wreath project by GO! Getter Melissa Corry is not only beginner friendly, it's kid friendly too! Just grab some of your fabric stash and a wreath wire, cut your fabric into strips and tie! Choose fabrics in holiday colors for seasonal door decor or pick fabric in a favorite color or with a favorite character as a kid's room decoration. Add cute accessories like a wooden initial or animal appliqué and you've got a customizable gift for anyone on your list!

Customized Pennants

Our GO! Pennants die (55149) makes creating a string of DIY pennants simpler than ever. Add appliqué or seasonal scraps to dress up any gathering or home celebration. Get creative with materials like cotton balls, cork, rick rack, metallic accents, buttons, etc to add a unique twist. This bunting tutorial shows how you can create recognizable shapes, like candy corn and bomb pops pennants with strips. Some other great ideas include a dreidels, pie slices, watermelon pieces, tombstones, carrots, reindeer, Santa's hats and more!

Unique Face Masks

The days of wearing face masks aren't over and it just might be time to update your supply. Why not get a little creative? Recycle fabrics you already have around the house like sheets, pajamas and shirts that have prints or characters you love. Start with a cotton base and place sheer fabrics like lace over top to make it safe, but perfect for weddings, nights out and other special events. Get ready for the holidays with themed fabrics or accents like vampire teeth, dog nose and Jack-O-Lantern mouth shapes. There are so many ways to make face masks part of your outfit - just bring your creativity!

All-Terrain Games

This cute fabric checkers board pattern is all about sewing straight stitches, so it's perfect for practicing ¼" seam allowance and points without the high stakes of a full size quilt or quilting project. Bust up your stash and give it a patchwork feel, just be sure you separate light colors from dark so you have a clear checker board pattern.

Appliquéd Zipper Bag

If you're ready to challenge your skills this zipper bag will make for a perfect step up from simple piecing and stitching. It's small enough to be approachable and the zipper construction isn't as hard as it seams, especially with this pattern and Pam's guidance on your side. When you're done, you will have something you can use! Our pattern features the GO! Camper (55228) appliqué but you can use any appliqué shape that suit you. Even better, this design makes for a great gift, so don't forget it when planning holiday gift giving.
