Crumb Quilting with the Carpenter's Wheel

Hi, Emily from Aunt Em's Quilts here.

I'm a scrap quilter and designer, and I've found that AccuQuilt Go! Cutters and dies make scrap busting so much easier.

I'm thrilled to be able to share my latest scrap-busting adventure with you.

Building a Scrappy Quilt Masterpiece

I must say that I've had so much fun playing with the Carpenter's Wheel Die. There are just so many possibilities.

As a scrap quilter, my mind was full of scrappy ideas. How is it that ideas come so much easier than finding the time to bring them to fruition?

Needless to say, my bucket list has grown with this die alone.

Because I recently taught a class on color and value, the color wheel naturally came to mind. After all, it is a wheel. Plus, what a fun way to use a lot of different scraps.

Next, I thought what would it look like if I reversed the lights and darks?

Then, just because I just wrote a book on crumb quilts. I thought, why not? Let's see how it would look with crumb fabric.

A Trail of Crumbs

First, I had to figure out the best methods for crumb fabric on the GO!

Here are a few pro tips:

  1. I found that three layers worked best.
  2. When piecing the crumb fabric it was best to sew then spray with starch. (I like Best Press.) while setting the seam. Then press to the path of least resistance. I found I pressed some seams to the background while pressing others open.
  3. Make sure you press and not iron. Meaning set the iron down. Don't move it around. Moving it around will distort the pieces. Making the piecing more difficult. You could end up with a tent in the middle of your block. Just saying.

Scraps of Creativity

I'm sure there are many more scrappy combos to create with this great die. I look forward to discovering them, and I hope this gives you a jumping-off place to bust through your scraps while creating beautiful scrappy carpenter's wheel quilts.
