Your New Favorite Kitchen Project: Quilt-As-You-Go Toaster Cover

If you’ve ever looked at your toaster sitting on the counter and thought, “You could use a little style,” we’ve got the perfect DIY project for you. The June Tailor Quilt-As-You-Go Toaster Cover (2-Slice) Kit is here, and it’s about to become your next go-to weekend make.

This kit combines everything quilters love: pretty fabrics, practical results and a project you can finish in a weekend. Plus, it doubles as a great way to use up scraps or show off those pre-cuts you’ve been saving.

What's in the Kit?

The kit comes with pre-printed batting that already has the fabric placement lines on it, webbing for a handle and full instructions with a link to a video tutorial. You just add fabric and your regular sewing supplies.

To make one cover you’ll need:

  • ¼ yard each of 2-3 fabrics and ½ yard of one fabric
  • ⅔ yard for lining
  • ¼ yard for binding

That’s it. The whole thing takes most quilters about 6-to-8 hours from start to finish, making it an easy weekend project suitable for beginners and seasoned quilters alike.

Why a Toaster Cover?

A DIY quilted toaster cover may sound a little old-fashioned, but once you make one, you’ll wonder why you didn’t sooner. Here’s why:

  • Keeps dust and grease off your appliances: Toasters live on the counter. A cover keeps them clean between uses.
  • Adds personality to your kitchen: Use bright florals, classic plaids or even seasonal fabrics and swap covers throughout the year.
  • Makes a perfect gift: Pair it with a cookbook, coffee beans or kitchen towels and you’ve got a thoughtful handmade gift.
  • Uses up scraps: Got a pile of leftover strips? This project will eat them right up.

And don’t feel limited to toasters, or even the kitchen. These covers can also work for other gadgets, like mixers, food processors, pressure cookers or even your iron in the sewing room!

How Quilt-As-You-Go Makes Quilted Projects Easy and Beginner-Friendly

If you’ve never tried Quilt-As-You-Go before, here’s the magic: the quilting is built into the piecing. The batting is pre-printed with numbered sections. You lay down fabric #1, add fabric #2 right sides together, sew along the printed line, flip, press and repeat until your panel is done. The instructions included with the kit are clear and easy to follow, and with the included video tutorial the project is practically fool-proof!

It’s like sewing by number – and it’s addictive! By the time you stitch the last seam, you already have a quilted panel. No separate piecing, no separate quilting. Just one step at a time until you’ve got a finished project. You might want to grab a second project to start on right away. That’s how much you’re going to love the Quilt-As-You-Go process.

Cutting Fabrics – Traditional Method and GO! Cutter Method included!

If you have an AccuQuilt GO! cutter, you’ll be thrilled to know this project pairs beautifully with several dies:

  • GO! Square 5” (4 ½” Finished) (55010)
  • GO! Strip Cutter-2 ½” (2” Finished) (55017 or 55014)
  • GO! Strip Cutter-3” (2 ½” Finished) (55084)
  • GO! Strip Cutter-4 ½” (4” Finished) (55054)
    • For small size only
  • GO! Strip Cutter-5 ½” (5” Finished) (55026)
    • For medium size only
  • GO! Strip Cutter-6 ½” (6” Finished) (55086)
    • For large size only

No GO! cutter yet? No problem. The kit includes instructions for traditional ruler cutting, and AccuQuilt has you covered for that, too! Use a Shape Cut Ruler and you’ll still fly through the fabric prep for this project.

Speaking of quilting smarter, these June Tailor tools are worth adding to your project bag:

  • Basting Spray (JT-440): No pins, no shifting.
  • Starch Savvy (JT-445): Crisp seams, easy piecing.
  • Fabric Glue Stick (JT-448): Great for binding or holding tricky corners.
  • Magic Seam Wand (JT-650): Press seams without hauling out your iron.
  • Shape Cut Rulers (JT-796 or JT-797): Fast, straight cuts every time.

These tools aren’t strictly required to complete a Quilt-As-You-Go kit, but they do make the process quicker and easier!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make it without a GO! cutter?

Yes. The kit includes ruler-cutting instructions, and while the AccuQuilt Cutting system makes things faster, easier and more precise, you can still use your trusty ShapeCut rulers and rotary cutters to prep your fabric.

Why are my fabric pieces bigger than the printed batting sections?

That’s intentional. Those lines marked on the batting are placement lines, not sewing lines. The standard ¼” quilting seam allowance applies to this and all other June Tailor Quilt-As-You-Go projects.

What if my batting looks wrinkled or kinked?

Your batting has been all folded up for a while! It may need a moment to decompress. Simply lay it flat for 24 to 48 hours. Don’t iron or tug, as you might distort the pre-printed fabric placement lines. Just let it relax for a day or two!

How long will the June Tailor Quilt-As-You-Go Toaster Cover take to make?

Most people finish in around 6-to-8 hours – this kit makes a great weekend project!

How many toaster covers does Quilt-As-You-Go one kit make?

The kit makes ONE cover. You pick the size! The batting is pre-printed with fabric placement lines for a small, medium or large toaster cover.

Is there a tutorial video?

There sure is! The instructions are clear and easy to follow on their own, but we know sometimes it helps to watch the stitching in action. All June Tailor Quilt-As-You-Go projects include a link and QR code to a step-by-step tutorial video with handy instructions, tips, tricks and inspiration!
