Heavenly Stars Quilt Tutorial

I love star quilts! I first designed and made a quilt like this many years ago for a friend’s new baby. I always wanted to make another, but all those flying geese...ugh.

Katy here from KatyQuilts to share with you the easy way to make this Heavenly Stars quilt!

 

Quilting Constellations

This is what you will need:

• 6" Qube (55775)
• 12" Qube (55778)
• 3 1/2" Strip Die for borders (55032)
• 2 1/2" Strip Die for binding (55017)
• 2 yards of a light background fabric
• A total of 2 yards of darker fabric for the stars. I used a bit over half of a layer cake.

 

You will make four 6" sawtooth stars with a dark background and 10 stars with your light background using shapes 1, 2, 4, and 5 from the 6" Qube.

Make four 12" stars using shapes 1, 2, 4, and 5 from the 12" Qube.

Let’s take a look at how a 6" star goes together.

 

 

 

A Star (Quilt) is Born

For each star, you will need four squares (shape 2 ) and four quarter square triangles (shape  4) for the background.

You will need eight triangles for the star points (shape 5) and one square for the center of the star (shape 1). 

 

 

Add star points to one side of the quarter square triangle like this.

 

 

Press toward the star point and then add the second. I love how perfectly these line up!

 

 

You now have four flying geese units. Sew your pieces together in rows.

 

 

Then sew the rows together.

Ta daaaa!

Pat yourself on the back!

 

 

Wasn’t that easy? Once your blocks are finished, it’s time to look at the layout. It’s much easier than it looks! Sew your large and small stars together into five large blocks like this.

 

 

Sew the two on the top right together as well as the bottom row.

Now you only have three large pieces to sew together.

 

Once these are sewn, add your 3" border strips. 

 

 

Quilt as desired, bind, and enjoy! 

I really love using two sizes of the same block in a quilt like this. Imagine using churn dash blocks or pinwheels instead of stars!
