2024 AQS & AccuQuilt-Along: Simply Qubed Throw Quilt, Show & Tell

What a fun project the Simply Qubed Throw Quilt has been! I’ve really enjoyed creating this quilt along with all our participants. Some of you have left AccuQuilt Cutting Expert Pam Heller and I in the dust as you’ve finished your projects ahead of us, but of course, we know it isn’t a race, right?

We’ve both been so inspired by the blocks and quilts that we’ve seen being created by all of you, that we just had to take a minute to share and celebrate. The AQS Quilting Project Parade Facebook page has been bursting with pictures of your beautiful projects.

Size Doesn’t Matter

As we discussed all throughout this process, this pattern by Anita Amador was written using the GO! Qube Mix & Match 10” Finished Block, but since the shapes are the same in every GO! Qube, just different sizes, it’s simple to make this pattern with any size Qube.

Through the process of making this project, we’ve really seen the versatility of the GO! Qube System. Although typically used with a 2x2 grid or 4-patch block layout, the blocks in this project are on a 3x3 grid or 9-patch layout. What does that mean? Well, using the 10” Qube, we’ve made 15” finished blocks! You can easily calculate the finished size with a different GO! Qube by taking the finished size of Shape 1 and multiplying it by 3. Let’s look at a few of the quilts made with different sized GO! Qubes. The GO! Qube System is so flexible!

Candace B used the GO! Qube Mix & Match 9” Finished Block and added sashing between the blocks.

Color and Fabric

You’ve all picked such wonderful fabric and color combinations for this project that we’re just in awe! We’ve also loved seeing and being a part of the design process with all of you.

From matching the colors in the pattern to branching out into bold, new pallets to red, white and blues for Quilts of Valor to special colors for gifts, it’s been so fun to see so many great looks!

One great way to “imagine” what your quilt was going to look before making your first cut was to use GO! Quilt, a free design tool on our website where you can not only re-color existing patterns in the program (like this one!) but you can access popular fabric lines to use, or upload pictures of your own fabric as well.

Make It Your Own

Besides changing up Qube sizes, some of you have decided to change up the size of your quilt as well. These blocks were just right for some relaxing chain piecing and adding blocks was a natural move. We even heard from some of you that the blocks were so fun to sew you decided to make your quilts bed sized.

Paula D decided to add more blocks when she got this far.
Debbie S finished 9 blocks and had so much fun she's going to keep going and make hers queen sized.

Adding borders and sashing really makes a difference with a quilt and puts your personal stamp on a project. Borders are like frames for your quilt center, and adding additional borders is like adding mats to a framed picture. Look at a couple of examples here.

Brenda R was an early finisher. She added 3 borders and fun corner units.
Lisa S made a real statement with her double borders.
CW really made this quilt her own! She used an 8” GO! Qube and added a unique center, sashing and creative borders.

This is just a sampling of the wonderful quilts that you all have shared with us. Be sure you’ve joined the AQS Quilting Project Parade Facebook page and enjoy seeing all the wonderful pictures using #AQSews. AQS will be adding a blog post with as many of your pictures as possible, so be sure to check that post as well.

Our next 2024 AQS & AccuQuilt-Along project will be announced in just a few weeks on May 22, and we’ll get started on Wednesday June 5. Pam and I already have our fabric picked out for this one and I’ll share that I’ll be using purple for this project! Keep an eye out for clues on the AQS Quilting Project Parade Facebook page.

Quilting together is just “sew” much fun, that I just have to share one last picture. Who among us hasn’t had trouble sleeping? Well, sometimes that means making use of your extra time as you’ll see below.
