Day 1 of Your Omaha, Nebraska Quilt Adventure
AccuQuilt’s New RJR Fabrics Gallery Exhibit
Make the most of this day by scheduling your AccuQuilt RJR Fabrics exhibit in the morning and give yourself plenty of time to fully enjoy the experience.
AccuQuilt’s latest gallery exhibit featuring 13 quilts from six of RJR Fabric’s premier designers. This exhibit, entitled “RJR Fabrics: A Retrospective 1978-Present,” is exclusive to the AccuQuilt Gallery and runs through July 31, 2017.
The 13 original quilt designs from designers at leading quilt fabric manufacturer, RJR Fabrics, includes a wide range in styles, making this exhibit an unforgettable experience for fans of traditional quilts and modern textile art alike. RJR is a family-run business employing dozens of renowned fabric and pattern designers. They produce over 2,400 fabrics per year and deliver the highest quality fabrics designed exclusively for quilt making.
AccuQuilt’s headquarters is located on 8843 South 137th circle. Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday 10am to 1pm. Friday tours are by appointment. Closed weekends and holidays. On the Road to Lincoln for the International Quilt Museum: With a Stop for Shopping
You’re on your way from AccuQuilt to Lincoln. It’s only about 45 minutes on I-80 and is an enjoyable drive. Just south of AccuQuilt and right off I-80 is the Nebraska Crossing Outlet mall. Shop here for Ann Taylor, Chico’s, Eddie Bauer, Steve Madden and so many more.
International Quilt Study Center and Museum in Lincoln
University of Nebraska at Lincoln is home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and to the International Quilt Study Center & Museum, which houses the largest publicly held quilt collection in the world. Admission to the Quilt Museum is only $8 for adults, less for seniors and children. They offer free parking and a variety of quilt-centric events throughout the year. Be sure to visit their website to find out what specific events, activities, and tours they’re offering during your visit. Plan on spending several hours enjoying the amazing collections, exhibits and maybe you can even take in a workshop.
Historic Haymarket Offers Food, Shopping and a Drink or Two
UNL’s Quilt Museum is near Lincoln’s restored downtown district, the Haymarket. This walkable, historic neighborhood features cobblestone streets and a plethora of outdoor and indoor dining options. It runs from O Street on the south to R street on the north and from 9th Street on the east to 7th Street on the west. For parking, check out Park & Go.
In the Haymarket, you’ll find boutique shopping plus plenty of places for indoor or outdoor dining. Try Laszlo’s for a local beer and upscale pub food, Vincenzo’s Italiano Ristorante for classic Italian food and a glass of wine, Leadbelly for hearty American pub food with a twist (sit in the back, it’s an old train car), or settle onto the patio and savor a margarita with Mexican food at El Portrero. The Oven is Lincoln’s premier restaurant for Indian dishes and features wines by the glass from its innovative Enomatic wine system located in the Cellar below the restaurant.
If you have extra time, refresh your quilt-fix and stop by local favorites Sew Creative on 5143 South 48th Street, Calico House in the Sutter Place Mall and Cosmic Cow on 6136 Havelock Avenue.

Quest to Find Those Quilt Shops!
Explore our fair city by way of visiting these local quilting shops: A Quilting Place on 11019 I Street in southwest Omaha caters to longarm quilters. The Country Sampler is located on 11928 West Center Road, which is also in southwest Omaha, the Quilt Studio is located on 4429 South 50th Street in south central Omaha, Nebraska, and the Bella Fiori Quilt Shop is on 7310 Harrison Street in Ralston, a suburb just south of Omaha. And, AccuQuilt Signature Dealer, Sew Creative at 2809 S 125th Ave in Omaha, Nebraska.
Omaha’s Downtown Offers Culture, Dining, Shopping and Our World-Famous Zoo
The Old Market is Omaha’s restored warehouse district located downtown. This historic, walkable neighborhood features cobblestone streets and a mix of shopping, galleries, restaurants, pubs and people watching. Local tip: save time and money by parking in one of the city parking garages or lots.
Between 10th and 13th on Howard Street is the main street of the Old Market, though it extends a few blocks north, south, and west, too. If you’re there for breakfast or brunch, Wheatfield’s offers generous portions of comfort foods. Lunch options range from a quick slice and soda at Zio’s to upscale American pub food or brunch with a local beer at Upstream Brewing Company. Lunch or dinner at Le Bouillon means chic French comfort foods, Twisted Fork has eclectic Americana dishes, or try Nicola’s, a cozy and busy Italian restaurant just west on 13th & Howard. You’ll never be disappointed with a stop at Ted & Wally’s afterward, for ice cream.
Omaha’s Pride and Joy: the Henry Doorly Zoo
Omahans (that’s what we call ourselves) are proud that our zoo is always ranked in the top 3 of the nation. It’s also conveniently near the Old Market and is definitely worth a visit. The zoo’s sprawling campus includes a brand new African Grasslands exhibit with elephants, giraffes, white rhinos, cheetahs and impalas plus a revamped Aquarium and so much more.
Get Cultured in Omaha’s Museums
Just west and north of the Old Market on 2200 Dodge Street is the Joslyn Art Museum, itself a pink marble masterpiece. This visual art museum offers art from ancient times to the present, focusing on 19th and 20th Century European and American art and art of the American West. Part of the permanent exhibit is a soaring Dale Chihuly glass sculpture and an outdoor exhibit that stretches around the building. General admission is free. The Durham Museum, located in an art deco train station on 801 South 10th Street just east and south of the Old Market, offers an in-depth look at the history of Omaha, Nebraska and a broad range of traveling exhibits. Cutting edge art can be found within the Old Market at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts on 724 South 12th Street, which is a gallery and international artist-in-residency program.
Where to Stay
There are, of course, a plethora of hotel, motel, inn, and bed and breakfast options in the Omaha area. Near the AccuQuilt headquarters in southwest Omaha, Nebraska is the LaVista Hotel and Conference Center at 12520 Westport that includes a variety of hotel accommodations plus entertainment and shopping at Cabela’s.
Another option is staying in the Old Market. There are several hotel options and you will be within walking distance from the culture, restaurants and night life.
