A Haunted Table Runner Quilting Tutorial

We love Halloween around here, so I jumped at the chance to make something with some spooky-goodness with which to decorate my table. When I saw the new Happy Haunting collection by Deena Rutter for Riley Blake Designs, I knew it would be perfect for what I had in mind.

I love the look of appliqués and using the AccuQuilt GO! Fabric Cutter makes the appliqué work much simpler to do and faster for sure.

 

 

I made my table runners to go across the width. Instead of making one long table runner, I prefer to place 2 side by side, with a 12 inch drop on each side. If your table runner is going to be placed lengthwise across your table, you could choose to fuse the appliqués in a different direction. Play around with the placement to see what you like best for your table! Let your imagination guide you.

A Haunted Table Runner Quilting Tutorial

Finished size: 18" wide x 63" long

Supplies needed:

• Center panel fabric: 1 2/3 yards of quilting cotton
• Bat appliqué: 1 fat quarter (or scrap) of black quilting cotton fabric
• Cat appliqué: 1 fat quarter (or scrap) of dark charcoal gray quilting cotton
• Moon appliqué: 1 fat quarter (or scrap) of yellow quilting cotton
• Patchwork borders: 6 or more fat quarters (or use scraps and as many different prints as you like)
• Backing: 1 2/3 yards of quilting cotton
• Binding: 172 inches
• AccuQuilt Dies:
  • GO! Circle-2", 3", 5" #55012
  • GO! Cat & Bat #55365
• Fusible web
• Batting

Sewing Instructions: All seams are 1/4".

Center Appliqué Panel

1. Cut the center panel fabric 12 1/2" wide x 57" long.

2. Cut the fusible web pieces to size.

For each appliqué design, cut a piece of fusible web slightly larger than the die size. The measurements for each die are written on the packages. I added about 1" to those measurements. For each table runner, I cut:

1 Cat:  6 1/4" x 8 1/2" piece of fusible web

1 Bat: 6 1/4" x 4" piece of fusible web

1 Circle: 6" square of fusible web

3. Fuse the fusible web to the wrong side of the fabric for each appliqué.

4. Trim the fabric to the fusible web.

5. Arrange the fusible web backed fabric onto the dies.

 

 

6. Place the cutting mat on top and use your AccuQuilt cutter to cut out the appliqué shapes.

 

 

7. Peel off the paper back from each appliqué shape and arrange them on the center panel. Fuse the appliqué in place. I used tailor's chalk to draw a placement line for my cat, 1/2" from the raw edge.

 

 

8. Stitch the appliqué in place if desired. I stitched the moon in place before I fused the bat on top of it.

 

 

Set the center panel aside.

Patchwork Borders

You can piece the borders together several different ways.

One way would be to cut 50 - 3 1/2" squares and sew them together into 2 rows of 6 squares each and 2 rows of 19 squares each for the 4 borders.

You could also cut 3 1/2" strips, sew the strips together, and cut the strip sets into 3 1/2" wide segments.

Here's how for a fast project.

1. Cut 12 strips: 3 1/2" wide by 18" long.

 

 

2. Sew together 6 strips, with right sides together. Press the seam allowances to 1 side.

 

 

3. Repeat Step 2 with the remaining strips of fabric to create one more strip set.

4. Cut the strip sets into 3 1/2" segments.

 

 

When done, you should have 10 strips of patchwork, each with 6 squares.

The top and bottom borders have 6 squares each, so two of these segments are ready to become the top and bottom borders.

Side borders

1. Sew together 3 of the 6-square segments, with right sides together, to create one long strip with a total of 18 squares.  Repeat for a second long strip.

2. Cut 2 - 3 1/2" squares. Sew a 3 1/2" square onto the end of each of the long strips of patchwork squares.

Sew the patchwork borders to the center panel.

1. Pin and sew together the long patchwork borders to the sides of the center panel, right sides together. Press the seam allowances to one side.

 

 

2. Pin and sew together the short patchwork borders to the top and bottom edges of the center panel. Press the seam allowances to one side.

 

 

Finishing

1. Make a quilt sandwich by layering the runner top, batting, and the backing together.

2. Quilt the quilt sandwich as desired.

3. Square up the table runner, trimming off the extra batting and backing fabric.

4. Bind the table runner with your preferred method.
