The first BOB (Block-on-Board) die Eleanor Burns "met" was the GO! Hunter Star. Now that she's been making her way around these blocks for some time, she's a BOB die professional. Eleanor enjoys getting all the shapes she needs for one block in record time. She understands how difficult and intricate the pieces are to cut with a rotary cutter and she wants no part of it.
With the GO! Hunter Star die, you can get the shapes you need for one block after two passes through your fabric cutter. But if you're someone who makes a lot of Hunter Star quilts and two passes through the cutter isn't quick enough for you, then get an extra die so you can put two through the cutter at the same time if you have the GO! Big.
Eleanor's Hunter Star Block Tips
- If you follow the directions for making the Hunter Star blocks, you can't go wrong. Don't try and guess how to put the pieces together.
- With the Hunter Star you really have to pay attention and make sure you have all the pieces lined up in the right position.
- Use a really good design wall to lay out your pieces.
- It's great to use Batik fabrics, because you can't tell the right side from the wrong side.
- These shapes have two different dog ears in order to make it even simpler to put together. The straight piece goes up and then the angled side goes away from the trapezoid.
- Pressing these pieces is just as important as sewing.
- Take your time when making these blocks. Consider starting with a small project like a table runner, and then work your way up to something bigger such as a lap quilt.
