Hi, quilters! Suzy Webster of Websterquilt here with a quick and easy holiday project using the now permanent GO! Mill & Stars-8" Finished Die!
I tend to make a new Christmas quilt each year, because it helps get me ready for the holiday season. This year, I decided to play with the Mill and Stars block to make a new table topper. By using green as the main color, I also think it looks like a wreath.
Materials Needed
- GO! Mill & Stars-8" Finished Die
- GO! Qube Mix & Match 8" Block
- Shapes 1, 3, and 4
- GO! Setting Triangle-8” Finished Die
- GO! Strip Cutter-2 1/2" (2” Finished) 3 Strips Die
- GO! Strip Cutter-1 1/2" (1” Finished) 5 Strips Die
- 1/2 yard of red fabric
- 1/2 yard of green fabric
- 1/4 yard or a Fat Quarter of gold fabric
- 1/2 yard of a background Fabric
- 1/3 yard of binding fabric
- Thread for stitching
- 35" x 35" of backing fabric
- 35" x 35" of batting
Steps
1. Cut the following:
- Green fabric
- One 4 1/2” square using Shape 1 from the GO! Qube Mix & Match 8” Block
- 24 of Shape B from the GO! Mill & Stars-8" Finished Die
- Red fabric
- Eight of Shape A from the GO! Mill & Stars-8" Finished Die
- Four 4 1/2” half square triangles (Shape 3 from the GO! Qube Mix & Match 8" Block)
- Four 2 1/2” border strips using the GO! Strip Cutter-2 1/2” (2" Finished) 3 Strips Die
- Gold fabric
- Eight of Shape A from the GO! Mill & Stars-8" Finished Die
- Four 4 1/2” quarter square triangles (Shape 4 from the GO! Qube Mix & Match 8” Block)
- White fabric
- Eight of Shape B from the GO! Mill & Stars-8" Finished Die
- Four 1 1/2” border strips using the GO! Strip Cutter-1 1/2" (1" Finished) 5 Strips Die
- Four large triangles using the GO! Setting Triangles-8" Finished Die
- Four small triangles using the GO! Setting Triangles-8" Finished Die
- Binding fabric
- Four 2 1/2” border strips using the GO! Strip Cutter-2 1/2” (2" Finished) 3 Strips Die
2. Sew four red Shape A pieces with eight white Shape B pieces to start a Mill & Stars block. Press all the pieces to the right as shown below. This will help you align the pieces when you sew them into blocks.
3. Repeat the process, now sewing four red Shape A pieces with eight green Shape B pieces.
4. Repeat the process, now sewing eight gold Shape A pieces with 16 green Shape B pieces.
5. Assemble four Mill & Stars blocks like the one shown below.
6. Sew one green 4 1/2” square to two gold quarter square triangles. Add two more quarter square triangles. Then, add two red half square triangles. Add the final two red half square triangles. This will create the center block below.
7. Assemble the quilt in diagonal rows. Add borders.
8. Layer the quilt with the batting and backing.
9. Quilt as desired.
10. Sew the binding strips together and iron in half as usual. Trim the quilt around the edge. Sew on the binding.
