Morning Star Rising Quilt

Hi, I'm Suzy Webster of Websterquilt

I love to combine blocks in unusual ways and see what happens when different blocks make secondary designs. That's what happened while I was working on this quilt. 

 

 

Morning Star Rising Quilt - 68” Square

First, you'll need to gather the following materials:

 

 

Cutting Instructions

Once you've got your materials, it's time to cut!

 

Color

Strips - Cut and then fanfold to make sub cuts in the next column

Cuts

Lime

  • 3 - 5 3/4” strips
8” Qube Die 4 - cut 64

Green

  • 3 - 4 1/2” strips

Morning Star piece A - cut 48

Light Turquoise

  • 1 - 5” strip
  • 2 - 5 1/2” strips

8” Qube Die 1 - cut 5

8” Qube Die 3 - cut 20

Medium Turquoise

  • 2 - 5” strips

Morning Star piece B - cut 32

Dark Pink

  • 3 - 4 1/2” strips

Morning Star piece A - cut 48

Orange

  • 6 - 4 1/2” strips
  • 1 - 5 1/2” strip

Morning Star piece A - cut 96

8” Qube Die 3 - cut 12

Peach

  • 6 - 4 1/2” strips

Morning Star piece A - cut 96

Navy Background

  • 6 - 4 1/2” strips
  • 1 - 5” strip
  • 2 - 12 1/2” strips
  • 2 - 5” strips
  • 2 - 5 1/2” strips
  • 3 - 5 3/4” strips
  • 8 - 4 1/2” strips (border)
  • 8 - 2 1/2” strips (binding)

12 1/2” square - cut 4
8” Qube Die 1 - cut 16
8” Qube Die 3 - cut 28

Piecing Instructions

Now, let's start putting it all together.

 

Block A (Corners) - Make Four

You'll Need:

Navy:

  • 4 - 12 1/2” squares

Orange:

  • 4 - 4 1/2” half-square triangles

Place triangle piece like this (above).

Sew on regular sewing line connecting the two corners as shown in the drawing.  

Then, iron to look like this:

Block B (Center Outsides) -Make Four

You'll Need:

Navy:

  • 16 - 4 1/2” squares
  • 24 - 4 1/2” quarter-square triangles
  • 8 - 4 1/2” half-square triangles

Lime:

  • 24 - 4 1/2” quarter-square triangles

Orange:

  • 8 - 4 1/2” half-square triangles

 

Sew 12 quarter-square triangle units.

Sew eight half-square triangle units

Layout your units and squares. 

Sew four of each row as shown below and then sew into blocks.

Block C (Morning Star) - Make Twelve

You'll Need:

Navy:

  • 96 - Morning Star piece A
  • 16 - Morning Star piece B

Orange:

  • 96 - Morning Star piece A

Dark pink:

  • 48 - Morning Star piece A

Peach:

  • 96 - Morning Star piece A

Green:

  • 48 - Morning Star piece A

Dark turquoise:

  • 32 - Morning Star piece B

 

Make four with four medium turquoise corners. Then, eight with two navy and two medium turquoise corners (everything else is identical).

Arrange your A pieces so they match the drawings below. 

You will end up making 48 units - with two peach and a pink on the bottom and a green on the top.  

You will also make 48 units - with two blues and an orange on the bottom and an orange on the top.

Then, sew on the corner pieces accordingly. 

Make four with four medium turquoise corners and eight with two navy and two medium turquoise corners

Block D (Ohio Star) - Make Five

Sew 20 quarter-square triangle units.

Sew 20 half-square triangle units.

Layout your units and center squares.

Sew four of each row as shown below and then sew into blocks.

Layout the quilt as shown below.

Sew rows together.

Then, sew rows into the quilt.  

For borders, sew two border strips together. 

Add to the left and right sides. 

Then, add to top and bottom - trimming off the extra length. 

Pro Tip: You can also pre-measure your quilt and cut the borders to length before sewing them.

Assemble your quilt and quilt it as desired.
