Introducing January’s Die to Try™: GO! Nosegay 10" BOB Die

What’s the best way to kick off a new year if you’re a quilter? With a new quilt project, of course! And if you’ve ever admired the Nosegay quilt block but avoided making one, you’re not alone.

This classic flower quilt block is beautiful, but it has a long-standing reputation for being more complicated than it looks. Between awkward angles, bias edges, and Y-seams, it’s traditionally been a block that quilters love in theory and skip in practice. That’s exactly why the GO! Nosegay-10" Finished Block on Board (BOB) die exists! This timeless design is now accurate, approachable, and enjoyable to sew.

Best of all? Not a single Y-seam in sight.

Why the Nosegay Quilt Block Used to Be So Difficult

The Nosegay block dates back to the early 1930s and has gone by several names over the years, including Bride’s Bouquet, French Bouquet, and Old-Time Nosegay. No matter the name, the construction challenges were always the same.

Traditionally, this block required:

  • Multiple small pieces with angled edges
  • Precision cutting on the bias
  • Careful Y-seam construction to get everything to lie flat

Even experienced quilters could struggle to keep points crisp and blocks consistent. Cutting inaccuracies compounded quickly, and a block that looked simple on paper could become frustrating fast.

The GO! Nosegay die removes those pain points entirely. All the shapes are cut accurately in one pass through the cutter, and the block is designed to go together without Y-seams. If you’re comfortable sewing a ¼” seam, you can make this block!

What Makes the GO! Nosegay Die Different

The GO! Nosegay-10” Finished Block on Board die measures 6” x 24”, so it works with any GO! Cutter. It includes 10 shapes, each clearly labeled with screen-printed letters and thoughtfully designed dog ears that make alignment easier and eliminate extra trimming.

One of the most important design features is Shape B, the diamond. Diamonds are notoriously tricky to cut by hand because so many edges fall on the bias. This die is engineered so that two sides of the diamond are cut on the strong, lengthwise grain. That added stability makes piecing easier and helps blocks stay flat and accurate as you sew.

The die is designed to cut a five-color block in one pass, but that’s just a starting point. Go scrappy for a playful look, limit your palette for something more modern, or experiment with value shifts to create secondary patterns. The structure is taken care of, leaving you free to focus on design.

As always, it’s a good idea to cut and sew a test block first to get familiar with how the pieces come together. After that, the process becomes intuitive and surprisingly fast.

Is This Die Worth It?

This is the question many quilters ask before buying a specialty die, and it’s a fair one.

At first glance, the GO! Nosegay die might seem like it’s “just for one block.” In reality, it’s far more versatile than that.

Because the block finishes at 10”, it works seamlessly with the GO! Qube Mix & Match 10” Finished Block and Companion Sets Corners and Angles. You can combine Nosegay blocks with Qube blocks, alternate them with other 10” finished BOB dies like GO! Enigma Star or GO! Irish Chain, or use them alongside simple blocks to create breathing room in a quilt layout.

You can even interchange certain units, as long as you’re mindful of shape differences. For example, an unit made with Shapes A and F from the Nosegay die can be swapped with an unit made from Shapes 14 and 15 from the GO! Qube. However, Shape F from the Nosegay die does not pair correctly with Shape 15 from the Qube. Understanding these distinctions gives you flexibility without frustration.

In short, this die isn’t just about cutting one block faster. It’s about expanding what you can design confidently, accurately, and without unnecessary complexity.

Setting Options and Layout Flexibility

The GO! Nosegay block looks just as good set traditionally as it does set on point. If you enjoy on-point layouts, the GO! Setting Triangles-10” Finished die makes that process simple and precise.

You can even turn each on-point block into a larger flat block by adding corner pieces from the setting triangles. This creates generous space around the Nosegay motif, perfect for showcasing quilting, applique, or embroidery. It’s a small design choice that can completely change the look and feel of a finished quilt.

Quilt Projects Made with the GO! Nosegay Die

Seeing how other designers use a die is often the best way to understand its potential. Here are a few projects created for AccuQuilt that show just how versatile the GO! Nosegay die can be.

GO! Hot Cross Buns Throw Quilt

Designer Lissa LaGrecca of Lovingly Lissa uses color play and repetition to give this quilt a distinctly modern feel, even though it’s built from a nostalgic block. The layered effect created by rotating units adds movement and visual interest. You can experiment with your own color ideas using AccuQuilt’s free GO! Quilt color design tool to see how dramatically this design shifts with different palettes.

GO! Nosegay Nebula Wall Hanging

This striking wall hanging begins with four GO! Nosegay blocks at the center and builds outward using shapes from the GO! Qube Mix & Match 10” Finished Block and Companion Set Angles, along with GO! Setting Triangles-10” Finished. Designed by Brianna Roberts of Sew Cute & Quirky, the on-point setting and bold color choices give this piece a strong Art Deco vibe that feels both graphic and elegant.

GO! Baby in Bloom Throw Quilt

Designed by Melissa Corry of Happy Quilting, this floral quilt combines blocks from two BOB dies: the GO! Nosegay-10” Finished and the GO! Magnolia Bud-7” Finished. It’s a great example of how different finished block sizes can work together harmoniously. While the name suggests a baby quilt, the design easily adapts to more mature color palettes for a throw or lap quilt.

GO! Celeste Galaxy Throw Quilt

Designed by Ellen Ault of Handmade 3D, this quilt shows just how much variety you can get from a single die. By flipping and rotating units, entirely new secondary designs appear across the quilt top. The layered blues create depth and movement, rewarding closer inspection the longer you look.

A Classic Block, Reimagined

The GO! Nosegay-10” Finished Block on Board die takes a beloved but traditionally challenging flower quilt block and makes it accessible, accurate, and genuinely fun to sew. Whether your style leans classic, modern, or somewhere in between, this die gives you the freedom to focus on creativity instead of construction hurdles.

If you’ve ever loved the look of the Nosegay quilt block but avoided making one, this die might be the perfect way to finally bring it into your quilting rotation.
