How To Create a Whirling Star Quilt Block for Winter

Katy here from KatyQuilts to help you brighten up your winter table! Winter can seem to be such a colorless season outside, so let’s brighten things up inside with a fun table runner using the GO! Whirling Star-12" Finished Die

 

 

Wintery Whirling Star Runner on Katy's Table

 

 

 

Materials Needed

 

 

Cutting Instructions

1. For the solid purple fabric, cut:

  • One 6” x Width of Fabric (WOF) strip.
    • Subcut this strip into six 6” squares. Place these on the GO! Whirling Star-12" Finished Die and cut 12 of Shape A.
  • Cut three 2 1/2” strips for binding using the GO! Strip Cutter-2 1/2” (2" Finished) Die.

 

2. With the solid blue fabric, cut:

  • Four 2 1/2” strips for borders using the GO! Strip Cutter-2 1/2” (2" Finished) Die.
    • Two strips measuring 36 1/2” long.
    • Two strips measuring 14 1/2” long.
  • One 12” x WOF strip.
    • Subcut to 12” x 3 1/4”. Place this strip on the GO! Whirling Star-12" Finished Die and cut 12 of Shape B.

 

3. Using the solid light blue fabric, cut:

  • One 6” x WOF strip.
    • Subcut this strip into six 6” x 3”  rectangles. Place these on the GO! Whirling Star-12" Finished Die and cut a total of 24 Shape C's.

 

4. With the solid lavender fabric, cut:

  • One 6” x WOF strip.
    • Subcut the strip into six 6” squares. Place these on the GO! Whirling Star-12" Finished Die and cut 12 of Shape A.
  • One 12” x WOF strip.
    • Subcut the strip to 12” x 3 1/4”. Place this on the GO! Whirling Star-12" Finished Die and cut 12 of Shape B.
  • One 6” x WOF strip.
    • Subcut his strip to six 6” x 3” rectangles. Place these on the GO! Whirling Star-12" Finished Die and cut a total of 24 Shape C's.

 

 

Piecing the Block

1. Sew one lavender Shape C piece to one lavender Shape A piece.

 

2. Sew one light blue Shape C piece to one purple Shape A piece.

 

 

Cut Whirling Star Pieces

 

 

3. Sew one lavender Shape C piece to one dark blue Shape B piece.

 

4. Sew one light blue Shape C piece to one lavender Shape B piece (pictured below).

5. Stitch each half as shown below.

6. Stitch the halves together to form one quarter block.

7. Stitch four quarter blocks into one whole block.

 

8. Make a total of three whole Whirling Star blocks.

Assembly Instructions

1. Sew the three blocks together.

 

2. Add the long solid blue side borders to the sewn Whirling Star blocks.

 

3. Add the short solid blue borders to the ends.

 

4. Quilt as desired.

 

5. Bind with the purple fabric.

 

6. Enjoy your new runner!
