Winter Chills Bring Lucky Star Block Thrills

Hi, quilters! It's Sarah Maxwell of Designs by Sarah J. Today, I will be sharing an exciting winter table topper featuring Lucky Star blocks!

I was so excited when I saw the GO! Lucky Star-10” Finished Die because it’s long been one of my favorite blocks. The design options are endless depending on how you vary the color placement or values—magical new designs can appear when your blocks are set together.

I used a version of the Lucky Star block in my Swivel quilt (pictured below) and really wish I had access to this Block on Board (BOB) die when I made that quilt.

First Comes Fabric

For this project, I selected the Happiness Blooms line by Deb Strain for Moda Fabrics.

This line just spoke to me because the soft greens and blues are so calming and soothing. I knew that mixing and matching them in the blocks would lead to a perfect table topper for my home.

Getting Started

To plan any project, I always start with Electric Quilt 8 (EQ8) Quilt Design Software. This software lets me audition fabric placement before cutting up any precious fabric. I experimented with the fabrics and the shapes in the die and settled on the layout you will see in my finished project.

After trying out lots of placements of my fabrics, I settled on this design:

Once the design was finalized, I cut my fabric into squares to make it easier to cut out the Lucky Star block shapes.

Of course, cutting was a breeze using my GO! Big Electric Fabric Cutter. One of my favorite parts of the GO! Lucky Star-10” Finished Die is how it cuts both the right-side up and reverse unit of patches with unusual angles.

Putting It Together

My favorite part comes next: seeing how the block pieces come together to create interesting new secondary designs.

Here’s the real beauty of the AccuQuilt system: pieces perfectly align, resulting in sharp, accurate points.

My project features four of the Lucky Star blocks. Since I wanted to use more of the Happiness Blooms fabrics, I decided to make two different colorations of the block.

Remember how I mentioned the fun of this block is all in the secondary design options? If you look closely, you’ll notice that a new center star emerges in my finished quilt. By swapping out the background fabric with a different print, a whole new design emerged.
