Hi, quilters! It’s Jen from Dizzy Quilter, here to share my latest scrap-busting project using the GO! Schoolhouse-Pieced-9" Finished Die and the brand new GO! Qube Mix & Match 5" Block with its Companion Sets, Corners and Angles.
Thinking Outside of the Box
I like to flex my creativity with my AccuQuilt Block on Board (BOB) Dies. Sure, it’s fun to make the block they were designed to create, but making something different is even more fun for me. I’ve really enjoyed playing with my GO! Schoolhouse-Pieced-9" Finished Die. I’ve put it into a couple of quilts so far - one was the Schoolhouse Scrap Quilt, where I made a rainbow quilt in Schoolhouse blocks. (That was so fun, I need to make another one!)
I also used a schoolhouse block in my BOB Test Block Sampler. So, where else could I go with this traditional block? I realized that the lower right corner of units makes up a 5” block, which was interesting, but not exciting until the GO! Qube Mix & Match 5" Block and its Companion Sets, Corners and Angles, were announced. That was when inspiration really hit me!
For this project, I made blocks using the little pattern books that came with the 5” Qubes. I love all of the different ideas that came with them, and I’m really interested in making a huge sampler quilt using all 216 of the designs that are available in the free downloadable pattern booklets. There is one available for each Qube and Companion Set, so I think creating the sampler quilt might be my winter quilt project!
Schoolhouse Blocks Rock!
Are you ready to make a fun scrap-buster quilt? To keep my color palette from being chaotic, I decided to focus on my blue scrap bin. I love the traditional look of a blue and white quilt.
For simplicity in cutting, all of the schoolhouse building blocks are made from Peppered Cotton in Ink. The background throughout is Peppered Cotton in white sugar. All of the 5” finished blocks are made from an assortment of blue fabrics from my studio. I mixed up Japanese prints, batiks, and traditional quilting cotton in my blocks.
Once you're done, the finished quilt size is 36” x 45”.
AccuQuilt Dies Needed
- GO! Qube Mix & Match 5” Block
- GO! Qube 5” Companion Set-Corners
- GO! Qube 5” Companion Set-Angles
- GO! Schoolhouse-Pieced- 9” Finished Die
- GO! Strip Cutter-2 1/2” (2” Finished) 3 Strips Die
Fabric Needed
- 3/4 yard of Peppered Cotton in Ink
- 1 1/4 yard of Peppered Cotton in White Sugar
- 3/4 yard of assorted blue fabric scraps
Other Quilting Items Needed
- 40” x 49” of batting
- 1 1/2 yards of backing
- 3/8 yard of binding
Cutting Instructions
To make it easier to follow, I made a table to know how many pieces of fabric I needed for the schoolhouse pieces.

Then, I started cutting out all of the shapes.
PRO TIP: Keep your pieces organized with sticky notes.
Once all of the schoolhouse shapes were cut, I started working on cutting the other parts I needed.
- Sashing: 31 pieces - 2 1/2” x 9 1/2”
- Cornerstones: 20 units measuring 2 1/2” x 2 1/2”
- Binding: six strips measuring 2 1/2” x Width of Fabric (WOF)
Construct the 5” Finished Blocks
To make each block, I used the instructions in the pattern booklets included with the 5” Qube sets. I cut the blocks out one at a time, carefully following the directions in the booklets.
The patterns I used from the GO! Qube Mix & Match 5" Block booklet:
- Diamond Star
- Propeller
- Trellis
- School Girl’s Puzzle No. 2
The patterns I used from the GO! Qube 5" Companion Set-Angles booklet:
- Lumber
- Loom
- Hover - I altered this one and just used the unit from #14 & 15
- Summer Fresh
The patterns I used from the GO! Qube 5" Companion Set-Corners booklet:
- Dovetail
- Beveled Edge
- Hardcover
- Cheeky
Based on those patterns in the respective booklets, I constructed the schoolhouse block portions like this:
1. Assemble the sky section, pressing the seams open.
2. Assemble the roof section, pressing the seams open.
3. Sew the sky and roof portions together, pressing the seams open. Set aside.
4. Assemble the front door of the schoolhouse, pressing the seams open. Set aside.
5. Lay out the three parts of the blocks in a stack next to your sewing machine: one for Roof & Sky units, another for front door pieces, and another for 5” blocks (see above).
6. Attach a 5” block to the front door portion. Press the seams open.
7. Attach the top half of the block to the bottom half. Press the seams open. Spray with starch to control all of those little seamlines.
8. Repeat for the remaining blocks.
9. Following the diagram of the quilt above, assemble the rows. You will have five rows of sashing and cornerstones with four rows of sashing and blocks. Press the seams open.
10. Assemble the quilt top, pinning at the intersections of the cornerstones and sashings. Press the seams open.
11. Step back and look at your lovely quilt top. Hooray!
12. Quilt as desired! I used a fun pattern with wavy lines and circles. I bound my quilt using striped fabrics - I love that extra movement you get with a striped binding.
