When it comes to quick and easy quilts, a classic patchwork quilt is always a winner. With a variety of square dies available, AccuQuilt makes quick work of cutting fabric for a simple patchwork quilt. When you're ready to take those fabric squares beyond basic patchwork, the new Studio Setting Triangle Dies make it easy to set those squares on point.
At first glance, the Studio Setting Triangle Dies look like half square triangle (HST) and quarter square triangle (QST) dies. The important difference is how the blades are oriented in relation to the fabric grain. Fabric cut with a HST or QST die will have the bias on the diagonal cut. Studio Setting Triangle dies are specifically designed to cut with the lengthwise grain on the diagonal.

Why Does the Bias Matter?
When you're using triangles to fill in the sides and corners of your squares on point, the last thing you want is a stretchy bias edge all the way around the outside of your quilt. The Studio Setting Triangle Dies also eliminate the dreaded "quilt math" that comes with trying to cut setting triangles correctly. The Setting Triangle dies are available in 5 sizes (6", 8", 9", 10" and 12" finished) that fit perfectly with the coordinating Studio Setting Square Dies. Like other AccuQuilt dies, these dies include seam allowance and dog-eared corners for easy and accurate piecing. The Setting Triangle dies can be used to make a quilt top in no time flat.
My Next On Point Quilt
Using Electric Quilt 8, I designed a fun and scrappy Christmas quilt that utilizes a layer cake for the patchwork center and yardage for the side and corner setting triangles. I am a collector of precuts because I love having a little bit of all the fabrics in a new fabric line. My most recent purchase is a Moda "To Be Jolly" layer cake by One Canoe Two.

Using the the Studio Setting Square-9½" Finished (50803) die, I can easily trim 41 of the layer cake squares down to 9½" squares. I plan to use the Studio Setting Triangle-9" Finished (50085) to cut 16 side setting triangles and 4 corner setting triangles from navy blue Moda Grunge. It may look complicated, but the quilt top is easily assembled by sewing each row together on the diagonal, then sewing those rows together to make a quilt top approximately 64 inches square.
I will probably add a 4 inch finished border of red Moda Grunge for a quilt top approximately 72 inches square. This quilt will be perfect for snuggling with my family to watch Christmas movies this winter. Since it's only July, and I have the new Studio Setting Triangle Dies, there's a good chance this quilt will be finished well before Christmas!
