Scrappy GO! Lucky Star Baby Quilt

Hi, quilters! I’m Stephanie of Steph Jacobson Designs. Today, I’m sharing how to use the GO! Lucky Star-10" Finished Die and ALL the rainbow scraps to make this fun and scrappy GO! Lucky Star baby quilt!

Time To Get Scrappy!

Scrappy isn’t always easy to pull off. It can be overwhelming to include so many fabrics and colors in one quilt. To help control the chaos, I suggest starting with a light solid or low-volume fabric for your stars. I chose Ruby Star Society + Sarah Watts “Birthday” - Funfetti in Cream Soda fabric. Using this fabric as my starting point, I started pulling fabric scraps in yellow, orange, blue, pink, purple and green.

When choosing fabric scraps, I try to stay away from “busy” prints and stick to fabrics that read mostly as one color. The end result is still fun and colorful without being too overwhelming.

Dies Needed

Fabrics Needed

  • 1 yard of light-colored solid or low-volume for stars (shapes A and H)
  • Rainbow-colored scraps for remaining Lucky Star shapes (B, C, D, E, F, and G)
    • If you don't have a lot of scraps, grab several fat quarters in a rainbow of colors!
  • 1/2 yard of gray (or another color) fabric for borders
  • 1/3 yard of fabric for binding

This baby quilt is made up of nine 10" finished blocks. Each block requires cutting four pieces of each shape on the die board, and the entire quilt requires 36 pieces of each shape on the die board. I recommend cutting ALL the pieces before you start sewing and storing the pieces in small labeled bags or envelopes to stay organized. For the record, I am terrible at following my own advice as I get so excited to just start sewing! I did use this method for this project, and it definitely kept me organized and made sewing the blocks together quick and easy.

Since we’re not using the die as it was intended (cutting a 4-color block in one pass), cutting can take a little longer than usual. It’s totally worth it, though!

Cutting Directions

1. Using the Funfetti in Cream Soda (or the light-colored solid/low-volume) fabric,

  • Subcut 18 pieces to make 5” squares. Cut each square along one diagonal. Cover shape A on the die board to cut 36 pieces.
  • Subcut nine pieces to make 7” squares. Cut each square along both diagonals into quarters. Cover shape H on the die board to cut 36 pieces.

2. Using the rainbow-colored scraps, cut 36 pieces of the remaining Lucky Star shapes (B, C, D, E, F and G). Use the following scrap sizes to cut each shape:

  • Shape B: 6” x 3”
  • Shape C: 4 3/4” x 2 3/4”
    • You can also cut the B/C pieces together from the same fabric using a 6" x 5 1/2" rectangle.
  • Shapes D and E: 3” x 3 1/2”
  • Shapes F and G: 5 3/4” x 3 1/2”

NOTE: Since some of the shapes are non-symmetrical, place fabric RIGHT SIDE UP when cutting!

I love that AccuQuilt has links to the cutting and sewing directions for their dies, including the Lucky Star block. I find it helpful to print these pages for easy reference while assembling my blocks. Even though we aren't using the same 4-color scheme in the directions, the blocks are still assembled in the same way.

Lucky Star Block Assembly Instructions

Once all your pieces are cut, it’s time to start sewing! An advantage of cutting everything prior to sewing is that you’re ready to sew, even if you just have a few free minutes here or there. Chain-piecing is perfect for this project!

Using low-volume with colorful, randomly-placed rainbow fabrics, you'll get a beautiful, scrappy Lucky Star block like mine:

To complete your Scrappy GO! Lucky Star baby quilt:

  •  Make a total of nine Lucky Star blocks and sew them together in three rows, with three blocks per row.
  • Cut two of the gray border strips to 30 1/2" lengths and sew to the right and left sides of the quilt top.
  • Cut the remaining two gray border strips to 36 1/2" lengths and sew to the top and bottom of the quilt top.
  • Layer batting between the quilt top and backing.
  • Pin or baste the layers together.
  • Quilt as desired.
  • Add binding, making sure to miter your corners.

The finished baby quilt should look something like this:
