How many of us sew in spaces that aren’t dedicated to just our sewing? How many more are making do with a hodge-podge of furniture that we’re making work for what we need? Sewing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and my sewing space has been everything from my bedroom floor to the kitchen to the dining room table! I’ve sewn in an attic and I’ve sewn in the basement.
For more years than I want to admit, I sat in an old wooden desk chair to sew, because it was the only chair that was a comfortable height to work with the antique table I was using as a sewing table. Back pain stopped me from sewing as long as I wanted to. Eventually, I upgraded to a padded desk chair, slightly better but still not wonderful.
I would lay quilts out on the dining room table to pin baste the top, batting and backing together and use all the counter space I could find in the kitchen to lay out pieces once I got to the point that crawling around on my living room floor wasn’t a good option.
