Real Life Sewing Spaces

If your December was filled with a flurry of quilting activity as you sprinted to the finish line with projects, January may find your area in need of some cleaning and organization. Whether you’re starting from scratch with a new space or trying to work with your existing area, there are always great tips you can get from your fellow quilters!

Katy Quilts

Hello Quilting Friends! Katy here from www.KatyQuilts.net to share my sewing space with you. I'm very fortunate to have large loft area for quilting! No matter how big or small your space is, organization is a must.

I store all my fabric by color, in wire basket drawers, my GO! Qubes, smaller dies and GO! Big Fabric Cutter on some shelves.

My longer dies, cutting mats and bolts of fabric can be found on shelving units under my cutting table.

A convenient storage idea for longer dies.

But this is my favorite storage piece of all. It is a classroom storage unit. I love making scrap quilts, so periodically, I die cut all my scraps into shapes I commonly use and store them here. I have labeled bins for 1", 2", 3" and 4" squares, half square triangles, rectangles, quarter square triangles, etc.

I am much more productive when I'm organized. I hope I've giving you some ideas to help organize your sewing space.

Patchwork Posse

I'm Rebecca from Patchwork Posse, and I am so excited to share how I am organizing my new sewing room. It's been a bit since I've had a dedicated area of the house for my quilting. I finally have a space to call my own, and I'm just beginning to get things organized.

As you can tell from my pictures, there is furniture, but the shelves are a bit bare because I haven't stared unpacking the boxes yet! Believe me, they will be filled by the time I'm done. It will take time for me to adjust to my  new space, and I'll probably shift a few things around to make the space work even better for me.

So, while I don't have everything set quite yet, I wanted to share what I have and how I plan on storing things.

I have a long arm in the room, which takes up a lot of space. I decided to pull it farther away from the wall to allow shelves to go all the way along behind it. It's the perfect space for the shelves that will hold my fabric collection, magazines and books. While it's a little tight, I don't have to shimmy to use the shelves - so that's good! They will hold a lot, and I'm excited to see how it turns out when the boxes are unpacked.

I also have a board laid across the long arm bars, which I use as an ironing station. I've done this in the past, and it's really helped make use of the long arm area when it's not in use.

What I really love about the space is having a large island in the middle. The middle of the room is often overlooked and not utilized - and I really wanted to make the most of my space. The island is on wheels, so I'm able to change the position inside the room and scoot it wherever I would like.

A moveable island to help make the most of the space.

There are double deep cubbies under the island that provide lots of extra storage space. This is the perfect place for my AccuQuilt Fabric Cutters, since they are deeper than average shelves with the handles. The shelves can also hold the long mats and dies, which is really nice. This way, they don't cut out of the shelves and "grab you" as you walk by.

The large island top provides plenty of flat space for cutting. I do plan on putting hooks on the side of those cubbies for rulers and more.

While It's not quite finished, I look forward to filling up the spaces with all my fabric, notions and other collections.

Sew Much Moore

I'm Nicole Moore, and I want to welcome you to the heart of Sew Much Moore - my sewing studio, where two bedrooms have been transformed into one large, creative sanctuary. You can see the entire journey of this transformation here, on my website www.sewmuchmoore.com.

As a proud Juki Brand Ambassador, my studio boasts an array of Juki sewing machines, each serving a unique purpose in my sewing projects.

One of Nicole's prized Juki sewing machines.

Colorful and functional, my Oliso irons, one in every hue, adorn the walls. As an ambassador for Oliso, I can vouch for their excellence in every seam and wrinkle Ipress. They're not just tools; they're a part of my creative process.

Before I was quilting, I did a deep dive into bag making. So much that I had my own Amazon shop and shipped my creations around the world! Due to the volume of sewing, I used an industrial sewing machine. This helped me accomplish the mass production of the product that was so popular at the time.

Nicole's impressive array of Oliso irons are proudly displayed.

My studio also features the AccuQuilt cutting system, an integral part of my design process. It plays a pivotal role in creating patterns like the Turntables quilt pattern, the Half Square Sunburst quilt pattern, and the Fractal Patchwork quilt pattern.

Organized meticulously in a dedicated corner are my AccuQuilt dies and the AccuQuilt GO! cutting system, all within easy reach thanks to the AccuQuilt Die Storage racks. For an immersive video tour of my studio, highlighting not only my long arm quilting machine but also the full range of Juki machines that are integral to my quilting and sewing projects, I invite you to explore my studio renovation article, linked above. The tour offers a closer look at the tools and spaces that fuel my creativity.

In the Sew Much Moore studio, every thread, fabric, and machine tells a story of passion and precision. It's more than just a room; it's a space where creativity blossoms, and sewing dreams come to life.

My Own Space

Almost two years ago, I moved into my dream house. The basement had storage, a bathroom and a wide open space to build my own dream studio.

Starting from scratch with laying out your creative space can me more challenging than you think. I went through dozens of possible designs, furniture choices - and pieces of graph paper along the way.

Although I had originally planned to house the bulk of the quilting area at the end of the room with a sliding glass door for maximum natural light, I switched it in favor or much more wall space. Before moving in, the space got fresh carpet, paint and better lighting.

It's still a work in progress as I continue to add, refine and organize. Of course, I need plenty of space for my grands to play as well. Organized toy storage is on the top of my to-do list.

I'm also planning to add an Arrow sewing table with acrylic insert so I can have a flat area for sewing and especially for quilting on my domestic machine.

I hope these sewing spaces have inspired you. Nothing helps my own creativity more than seeing some examples and having a clean, organized space to work in. Be sure to share pictures of your own space and ideas that you want to put into action as we sew our way into 2024!
