The Final 2023 AQS & AccuQuilt-Along Series Is the GO! Dart Around Glorified Nine Patch Throw Quilt

I’m so excited to introduce you to this project as it is one of my all-time favorites that uses one of my favorite Block on Board (BOB) dies of all time as well. Don’t worry if you don’t have the GO! Glorified Nine Patch-9" Finished Die (yet) or even a GO! Fabric Cutter because we’ve got downloadable templates available below for traditional cutting.

Why the Love?

Here are some of the reasons why I love this die, starting with how easy it makes it to create this block. Plus, it works in any GO! Fabric Cutter. The block is an old classic that I first discovered in an artist friend’s home. Lisa Worrell of Itty Bitty Boo Design has a style and vibe that I just love! She had acquired an antique quilt top with the Glorified Nine Patch that she used to decorate her home.

Our die creates a slightly sleeker, modernized version of this block. I freely admit to pestering our Chief Brand & Product Officer Lynn Gibney until she gave in and created this die. This block finishes to 9” and is a fantastic companion to almost any other 9” finished block as it creates a circular-looking frame for other blocks. You can also create so many different looks with this die just by changing up your color and fabric placement.

Now, you may have noticed that there are curves involved, but they are gentle and easy to sew curves – really, I promise! Even if you’ve never been comfortable sewing curves, now is the perfect time to give it a try because AccuQuilt Cutting Expert Pam Heller and I will be available to help you every step of the way.

Finally, there’s never been a better time to get comfortable with sewing curves! Not only has AccuQuilt recently released a couple of fantastic new curvy dies (GO! Joseph’s Coat-11" Finished and GO! Signature Circles-6" Finished Dies), but curves are everywhere in quilting these days.

Quilt-Along Details

This project finishes to 35” x 35”, so it’s perfect for a small throw, a wall hanging or a baby quilt. It can easily be enlarged to create a quilt as big as you would like. It works really well for scraps, solids or small prints. It’s also great for seasonal looks or to match any decor. In short, it’s just a great fun project!

To get started, you’ll want to download the free pattern for the fabric requirements and assembly directions, even if you’re not using the die to cut your quilt.

Next, it’s fabric shopping time – whether you’re shopping your scraps, your stash or starting fresh! I’ve had this project floating in my quilting head for some time now. A year ago, I went on a fabric shopping expedition with my bestie and picked up a variety of small prints with a 30’s reproduction feel that I can’t wait to cut into!

For background, I’m deciding between a solid white and White Paper Grunge by Basic Gray for Moda, or a different light (probably white) tone on tone print.

The Start of Erica's Fabric Pull for the Project

Pam made this quilt from a variety of yummy Grunge shades years ago for her granddaughter, but she’s considering shopping her stash for this one. I think she has some Buttercup & Slate by Corrie Yoder for Moda that she’s been itching to use that may find its way into this project.

This project lends itself to solids and small prints, but don’t let that stop you from experimenting! Be sure to utilize AccuQuilt's free design tool, GO! Quilt, to visualize your quilt with a variety of different colors. You can also use the fabric collections that are loaded into the program or, better yet, download pictures of your own fabrics!

Traditional Cutting

Never fear if you don't have a GO! Fabric Cutter (yet). You will still download the pattern for fabric amounts and assembly directions, but you'll use the free, downloadable templates found here to cut your fabric. Our friends at AQS have also provided the following notes for tradtional cutting.

Using the linked template above, cut the following shapes in the order listed.

1. Cream/Background:

  • Four strips at 4 1/2" x Width of Fabric (WOF) for the border
  • 36 of Shape D

2. From each coordinating color:

  • Four of Shape C
  • One of Shape A
  • Four of Shape B

3. Aqua/Binding

  • Four strips at 2 1/2" x WOF

Schedule

So, here’s how this quilt-along is going to work! You’ve got two weeks to gather up fabric, etc.

For each week, there will be an AccuQuilt blog post and an AccuQuilt Live show at 12/noon CT. Be sure to sign up to on the Events page to receive reminder emails for these and all upcoming livestream events. All shows are recorded and can be watched later. AQS will also be updating their original blog post about the event weekly.
